 By: Martin Luther

In Bunyan's book, Grace Abounding, he tells of how he read Luther's commentary on Galatians.  He said, "I do prefer this book...excepting the whole Bible, before all books I have ever seen."  When I read that, I knew that I had to get this book.  I purchased the edition published by Kregel and devoured it.  If you want to learn about the doctrine of justification by faith, you need to read Luther.  It can be found online at

God's Way of Holiness
 By: Horatius Bonar

This book is a companion to God's Way of Peace.  In it Bonar shows how believers are progressively sanctified only when they are assured of their justification.  It can be found online at

God's Way of Peace
 By: Horatius Bonar

I first learned of the 19th century Scotish preacher, Horatius Bonar, from reading about the life of Robert Murray M'Cheyne.  I found this book at Kregel's used bookstore in Grand Rapids.  What a treasure!  If you have any doubts about your salvation or just need a clearer understanding of God's grace, you need to read this book.  It can be found online at

Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners
 By: John Bunyan

This was the first Christian book I read after I was saved.  It describes the struggles that Bunyan had as he was coming to Christ for salvation.  He went through some very dark times, but the Lord brought him out of it.  It can be found online at

Holiness the False and the True
 By: H. A. Ironside

This is a refreshing book for those who have struggled with trying to find a second blessing experience.  The first half of the book is Ironside's personal testimony of his early years in the Salvation Army and the struggle he had trying to reach a higher life.  The second half is a biblical study of sanctification and holiness.  According to Ironside, there is no second blessing.  True holiness can only be found as the Christian is occupied more and more with Jesus Christ.  It can be found online at

The Everlasting Righteousness
How Shall Man Be Just with God?
 By: Horatius Bonar

In this book, Bonar deals in detail with the doctrine of justification.  He understood the legalistic struggles that people sometimes go through.  He was greatly used by God to teach me the freeness of the gospel.  There is a whole chapter on faith not being a work, but a simple resting on Christ.  You can find this book online at

The Life, Walk, and Triumph of Faith
 By: William Romaine

This is actually 3 separate books.  William Romaine was a 18th century pastor in England.  He was part of what was known as the Evangelical Awakening.  In these books he gives a tremendous explanation of the gospel.  He stresses the necessity of assurance of salvation that is based on faith in Christ alone.  These books can be found online at
